Ubicada en un lugar excepcional en la carretera federal que une Mérida y Campeche (principal vía en el camino de Ciudad de México a Cancún), muy cercana a las zonas arqueológicas de Uxmal, Oxkintok y la ruta Puuk, a las cuevas de Calcehtok y de Loltun, a las bellas ciudades coloniales de Mérida y Campeche y a la bellísima zona costera y reserva de la Biosfera de Celestun.
Las construcciones más antiguas se remontan a poco tiempo después de la conquista, según la tradición de los lugareños en el lugar se ubicaba una gran pirámide, que se desmontó y reutilizó para la realización de algunos de los actuales edificios, quedando evidencia en la enorme cantidad de piedra tallada existente en pisos y terrazas.
